A massive rockslide occurred early Wednesday morning blocking the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway in Southern Utah’s National Parks, closing the road between Canyon Junction and the east entrance of the park, making the entire eastside of the park inaccessible to the public. The rockslide took place on the 90° switchbacks west of the Zion Tunnel, near the Pine Creek Bridge. A detour for the east and west traffic has been arranged via Highway 59, connecting Hurricane to Fredonia and Highway 14 from Cedar City to Long Valley Junction.
First dedicated to the public approximately 30 years ago (Sept. 30, 1985), the long and arduous construction of the critical southern Utah reservoir began in 1982. In the early-80s, Washington County’s population was approximately 36,000 residents, at that time it enjoyed an annual tax base of roughly $100 million dollars, according to Ron Thompson, the general manager of the Washington County water Conservancy District. As of 2015 the county’s population has exploded to over 150,000 occupants with a yearly tax base of approximately $15 billion. With a storage capacity to approximate 40,000 acre-feet of water, Quail Creek reservoir provides a projected yearly economic boost to the local economy of approximately $75.7 million.
Former Dallas Mavericks Center Shawn Bradley, a.k.a. the “Stormin’ Mormon,” has just listed his Murray, Utah, home for $3,950,000.
