2016 St. George Utah Parade of Homes

St. George, Utah – it’s January 15, 2016 and that can only mean one thing for southern Utah – The 2016 St. George Parade of Homes is less than one month away.

Kicking off February 12, 2016, the architectural extravaganza that is one of Southern Utah’s largest events will be attracting visitors and potential homebuyers for nine days beginning the second week of February. Initially conceptualized as a means of highlighting some of Southern Utah’s astonishing homes and the incredible quality of life offered in Washington County, the  St. George Area Parade of Homes exposes our sweet little corner of Southern Utah on an annual basis. Enticing potential new residence from different corners of the country to explore Washington County, and all it has to offer.

2016 St. George Utah Parade of Homes

2016 St. George Utah Parade of Homes

As is tradition, the hard-working people at Southern Utah Home Builders Association (SUHBA) and Zions Bank are sponsoring the 2016 St. George area Parade of Homes. A chamber of commerce moment – Parade week in the St. George area is a pretty big deal; stimulating the local economy, and exposing out of area buyers to the hidden gem that is southern Utah. Boosting the local economy, the St. George area Parade of Homes is held every year during the second week of February, kicking off the President’s Day weekend and running for a total of 9 days.

The futuristic look at architecture, floor plans, and amenities – otherwise known as The Parade of Homes – will run through February 21, 2016. Constituting an annual pilgrimage for cutting-edge architects, forward thinking interior designers and those potentially thinking of relocating to our sweet little corner of Southern Utah. Exposing our area to new homeowners while helping them to discover exciting new construction techniques and design applications. Weather permitting, each model home in the Parade of Homes will be ready for the Big Show; decorated, landscaped, and in some cases ready to be sold. Technologically sophisticated amenities are the new norm in many of these futuristic homes of the Southwest, emphasizing the skillful craftsmanship and talented local artisans. These futuristic structures gently intermingle and are seamlessly interlaced within the beautiful red Bluff vistas of the southwestern landscapes.

26 years later, the 2016 St. George Utah Parade of Homes is more relevant than ever.

This year’s event will be featuring futuristic homes loaded with some of the most innovative technological advancements available. Regardless of whether or not you’re a newbie to this event…or this is your 26th year, each and every Parade of Homes offers a learning experience for its attendees.

Last year over 30,000 people flood into Washington County to witness firsthand this architectural juggernaut. While some may scratch their head and wonder,  just what draws so many people to the “Palm Springs” of Utah for the annual Parade of Homes? I’d have to say it’s the access to awe-inspiring day trips, diverse southwestern  activities, pleasant year-round golf temperature, in addition to our affordable cost per square foot for housing. Regardless of the reason our visitors come – The Parade of Homes, hiking through Zion National Park, inexpensive rounds of golf… or relaxing at one of our world-class spas  – they WILL be here in less than 30 days.

Southern Utah Events & Open House Directory: July 11, 2015

St. George, Utah – it Saturday morning July 11, 2015 – and so far 13 Realtors have scheduled one of their listings for an Open House today.

While Realtors like myself will be busy doing a little hand-to-hand combat in the real estate trenches of Southern Utah, locals and tourists alike will be soaking in the sites and enjoying some unique St. George events. As families with kids will be staking out their camping area early at ‘The Waterfall’ on the Virgin River, getting ready for the skim board classic, others who long for a simpler medieval time will be checking out the Utah Midsummer Renaissance faire up in Cedar City.

As for me, I’ll be camped out at the local Engel & Völkers real estate office at Ancestor Square. Doing some paperwork, preparing for next week, and hopefully stopping by the downtown farmers market, held every Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM.

Now that the recent rains have subsided and moved eastward and today’s weather is predicted to be in the mid-90s – this will be a gorgeous day for those searching for that perfect home in sunny southern Utah.

Kicking off tomorrow morning at the Sand Hollow Reservoir, the 2015 Ironman 70.3 triathlon will swim, bike, and run around the crimson red rock topography of southwestern Utah.

Ironman 70.3 Facts:

Held in the heart of Washington County, the Ironman 70.3 will blaze westward from the Sand Hollow Reservoir though the municipalities of Washington City and St. George Utah. This physically challenging race will include a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike race, and 13.1 mile run. Huffing and puffing their way through southern Utah’s scenic vistas & breathtaking landscapes, the athletes participating in this year’s Ironman 70.3 will no doubt come face-to-face with their own physical limitations.

  • Date: Saturday, May 2, 2015
  • Time: To be determined
  • Admission: $290.00 per participant

Helping to kick off the North American Pro championship series, the St. George event is one of the earliest Ironman triathlons held in the North American series.

Once the athletes are transported to the starting line from the parking lot at Sand Hollow, the Ironman 70.3 triathlon will start off with a pulse-quickening swim across southern Utah’s Sand Hollow Reservoir.

Needless to say, the 56-mile bike race and ensuing 13.1 mile run are two of the more challenging obstacles on the Ironman 70.3 circuit.

The St. George Ironman event is an integral part of the Regional Ironman TriClub Championship race series. In addition to member’s only special on-site events, athletes who do well could potentially end up qualifying for one of the 30 slots available for the 2015 Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

Facing extreme peaks and valleys throughout this course, athletes and spectators alike will enjoy the breathtaking views of downtown Saint George, Snow Canyon State Park and the Awe-inspiring Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.

Buoying spirits and enthusiasm, the long and arduous climb out of Snow Canyon will be lined with several motivational posters from the local tri club. Hopefully helping to ease the difficulty of the physical task at hand.

It’s Almost Vacation Time For Southern Utah’s Nearby National Parks

St. George, Utah – it’s Saturday morning February 28, 2015, and with springtime just around the corner, this seemed like a perfect time to discuss the many opportunities for creating your dream vacation in southern Utah’s nearby National Parks.

From exploring the natural wonders of Zion’s breathtaking views, magnificent red rock sunsets, and adventurous hiking trails, to discovering the plateaus of its grand mesas and the depths of its brilliant canyons… Zion National Park has much to offer!

Some of the best scenery and recreational opportunities in the country can be found within minutes of downtown St. George. In addition to Zion National Park, there are four other National Parks that literally give southern Utah a unique perspective of its spectacular and scenic geological history. The five parks are located in close proximity, only 1 to 3 hours driving time between each other. The areas mild climate provides ideal conditions for year-round camping, hiking and fishing. Water sports start early in the year and the season extends well into the late fall. Some of area’s state park campgrounds are open all year; offering modern restrooms, hot showers, and electric hookups. With camping, swimming, horseback riding, and hiking all on the southern Utah menu, a vacation in Zion National Park will create memories that are guaranteed to last a lifetime.

It's Almost Vacation Time For Southern Utah's Nearby National Parks

It’s Almost Vacation Time For Southern Utah’s Nearby National Parks

Long coveted as a national treasure, Zion is considered one of the most scenic destinations in southern Utah. The park’s towering sandstone walls and monolithic red cliffs provide a geological perspective on southern Utah’s history. From its life-giving rivers and riparian areas, to the parks pine forests and sandstone deserts; there is much to discover in Zion. Embracing natural arches of elevated sandstone, a diverse variety of plants and animals, the Park is worthy of your family’s valuable vacation time.

As a means of minimizing traffic congestion and controlling any unwanted exhaust issues, shuttle services operate from early April through October in both the National Park and the nearby community of Springdale Utah. As such, private vehicles are not permitted on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive when the shuttle is in operation. That said, the Zion-Mount Carmel highway is open year-round and connects Springdale to Bryce Canyon, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and Kanab Utah.

Other nearby state parks in southern Utah include: Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Gunlock State Park, Quail Creek State Park, Sand Hollow State Park, and Snow Canyon State Park.

For those with a little more time on their hands and adventure in their hearts, there are five additional National Parks in close proximity to southern Utah: Canyonlands National Park, Capital Reef National Park, Arches National Park, North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and Bryce Canyon National Park.

Within the nearby State and National Parks visitors will have the opportunity to: take a scenic bike ride, star gaze at the heavens, picnic with loved ones, go horseback riding, camp with friends and family, play on the endless sand dunes, enjoy a multitude of water sports, hike miles of well mapped trails, and explore ancient lava tubes.

My Attempt To Vote in Washington County

My Attempt To Vote in Washington County

didn’t end well…

St. George, Utah – To say I’m a little upset right now would be a massive understatement. As a property owner and a taxpayer I believe it’s incredibly important for a state’s citizens to be allowed to vote. Unfortunately today, I was turned away from my normal polling place after being told the area I live in was unknowingly redistricted in 2013.

As a resident of the Bloomington area of St. George Utah, my normal polling place was the Bloomington elementary school. When I arrived today to cast my ballot, I stood in line and read the requirements necessary for doing so. Valid Utah ID. OK, got it. Feeling smug about my preparedness, I approached the volunteer and handed over my Utah drivers license. After a few minutes of flipping through the pages of registered voters, she looked up and informed me that I was not on her list. Confused, I asked how that could be? Redistricting was her solemn answer. In an attempt to be helpful, the volunteer called the Washington County clerks office in order to find out where it was I was to vote. While on speakerphone, the county official informed the volunteer that my name appeared nowhere on the county list of registered voters, and that I would need to cast a provisional ballot at the Tonaquint intermediate school. Provisional ballot?

  1. “A provisional ballot is a ballot provided to a voter whose eligibility to vote is not immediately established on Election Day. Provisional voting ensures that every qualified and registered voter has the opportunity to vote a ballot that will be counted on Election Day.”

As this process played out in front of a group of elderly folks, I was informed by several potential voters waiting in line, that several of their friends were also missing and had been turned away from the Bloomington precinct. When I arrived home I called the Washington County clerk’s office and spoke with Catherine about my situation. She informed me that the county had received a return mailer from an old address, one that I had not lived at for more than 12 years. And based on that returned piece of mail I had been put on an inactive status and would need to cast a provisional ballot. Despite the fact that I had voted in the Bloomington precinct several times since moving from the old address in question.

Out of time and patience … I gave up: Never mind the fact that I’m a property owner, taxpayer and was under the impression that I was a registered voter in the Bloomington precinct. I would need to cast a provisional ballot at the Tonaquint intermediate school, regardless of anything I could prove. Feeling disenfranchised … I decided that writing about today’s eye-opening experience would help me vent my frustration and anger over being turned away from one of America’s greatest rights – the right to vote.

Welcome to the decline of American Democracy!
